How to Price Single Sales on Ream

Ream is a publishing platform that allows authors to publish stories, build a readership, and earn income directly from readers. Authors can publish serial fiction, e-books, audiobooks, and comics while using discovery, community, subscriptions, and Single Sales to grow their audience and business. Authors can price Single Sales books on Ream using the platform's built-in tools and settings.

Overview

On Ream, authors set a one-time price for completed books that readers can purchase without subscribing. Single sale pricing is fully controlled by the author and can be updated at any time.

Before You Price a Single Sale Book/Audiobook or Comic:

Confirm the following:

The book is fully completed
The book is published
Single sale pricing is enabled in the book’s settings

Single sales are currently available only for completed books. Audiobook and Comic sales are coming soon.

Where to Set Single Sale Pricing:

Look for the Sales tab inside the Stories tab on your Author Dashboard.

Once saved, the price applies immediately to new purchases.

What the Price Controls:

The single sale price determines:

What non-subscribers pay to buy the book
Whether readers choose to buy outright or subscribe instead
How the book appears in purchase prompts

Pricing does not affect:

Subscriber access (if enabled)
Free access rules
Previously purchased copies

Common Single Sale Pricing Examples

Below are realistic, commonly used configurations. These are examples only. You have full control of your pricing.

Example 1: Short Novel or Novella

Single sale price: $2.99–$4.99
Use case: Standalone story or shorter completed work
Reader expectation: Low-friction purchase

Example 2: Full-Length Novel

Single sale price: $4.99–$7.99
Use case: Completed full book
Reader expectation: Comparable to e-book pricing on other platforms

Example 3: Backlist Title

Single sale price: $1.99–$3.99
Use case: Older completed work
Reader expectation: Easy entry point to your catalog

Example 4: Premium or Exclusive Edition

Single sale price: $7.99–$12.99
Use case: Special edition e-books, extended versions, or bonus content included
Reader expectation: Higher value, not casual browsing

Using Single Sales Alongside Subscriptions:

Single sales can be used with subscriptions in several ways:

Subscriptions for ongoing or serialized work + single sales for completed books
Subscriptions for early access + single sales after completion
Single sales only, with no subscription requirement

Pricing for single sales is independent of subscription tier pricing.

Changing a Single Sale Price:

To update pricing:

Navigate to the Sales section of your Stories tab on your Author Dashboard
Select a new price in the top section and click Apply Changes at the bottom
The system will ask you to confirm the price - you can click cancel or update

Changes will apply to future purchases only.

Readers who already purchased retain access at their original price.

Important Notes:

Single sale prices are one-time charges applied by our payment processor
Only completed books can be sold as single sales - serialized fiction remains as a subscription offering
You can change pricing at any time
Pricing changes do not affect past purchases by readers (example: Reader A purchased ABC e-book on January 1 at $3.99 and you raise the price to $4.99 for future purchases - Reader A will not be charged the dollar difference again)
